Day 3

Shared Reading

Step 1: Before the session begins, cover the chosen vocabulary with paper. Then distribute the words to the class. As the book is read aloud, individuals are to hold up a hidden word. Be sure that each child has an opportunity to supply a word.

Step 2: Ask the students to identify compound words in the story. Make a list of these words.

Step 3: Review nouns and verbs.

Step 4: Ask individuals to choose a page. Allow time for the children to locate the nouns and verbs on that page.

Step 5: Focus on the names of animals. Write them on cards. If possible, have pictures of these animals; otherwise, use the book. Allow time to match the names with the pictures.

Step 6: Write corresponding verbs on cards and then match them to the nouns. Examples: mouse - creeps, grasshopper - hops or jumps.

Step 7: Arrange the animal cards in alphabetical order.
